Training Description:

This one-day workshop focuses on the PLAY Project, a unique, community-based autism training and early intervention program. The model is based on the developmental theories of Stanley Greenspan, MD, known as the Developmental, Individualized, and Relationship (DIR) Oriented Model - also known as “Floortime.” The key strategies in Floortime are to follow the child’s lead and build on their natural interests to engage them in socially interactive play.

The DIR theory and research will be presented along with videotape case examples to help participants learn Floortime strategies, methods, and techniques. This session will help parents and professionals learn effective, low cost, efficient, and playful ways to provide intensive programming for young children (18 months through 8 years) with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) to help them gain language and social skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify current trends and research in ASDs.
  • Discuss occupational, educational, behavioral, and developmental programs for children with ASDs in terms of the available evidence for effectiveness.
  • Accurately profile the child with ASD according to Greenspan’s six stage DIR theoretical framework.
  • List and describe basic DIR (Floortime)/play therapy principles, strategies, and techniques using the PLAY Project’s Skill Sequence.
  • Apply PLAY Project play therapy intervention techniques with children with ASDs.

Presenter:

Rick Solomon, MD, the medical director of the PLAY Project (www.playproject.org), is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics. Dr. Solomon has been diagnosing and treating children with autism spectrum disorders for over fifteen years. He is a member of the Autism committee for the Michigan Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics. A colleague of Stanley Greenspan’s, he is a board member of the Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders (www.icdl.com).
